FASHION FUTURE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Australian designer Lia Tsimos talks of timeless style and her fashion journey.

Describe your style or collection
Sophisticated, glamorous, alluring and unique, the perennially delightful Moss & Spy label exists on that fine line between all that is soft and strong, feminine and masculine, for a woman that is sexy, sensual, independent and not afraid to be noticed.
A mélange of genres, unusual textures, interesting fabrics and embellishments, and the use of contrasting concepts characterize Lia’s designs. It is about finding that “look” somewhere between pretty and mannish, and producing a range that is sexy, sophisticated and elegant with a dash of the unexpected.
Where did the journey into fashion design begin for you –Who has influenced you most in your life –
Lia Tsimos established her first label during the glittering 80’s. At 23 Lia opened her first boutique “The Next Influence” in the fashionable district of Toorak, Melbourne. Her reputation quickly grew and within twelve months she opened a second boutique selling to a small but dedicated following looking for feminine clothing with a point of difference.
She was soon heading the design teams of Adele Palmer and later moved to Sydney to launch new labels with George Spyrou.
In the late 90’s Lia was the creative force behind the successful Bang label before moving to London in 2001. In London Lia created designs for some the big high street stores such as Topshop, Oasis, and River Island traveling widely and achieving distribution throughout the United Kingdom and internationally.
Studying in Paris, Lia is strongly influenced by Europe’s great designers, Chanel, Dior, and Yves Saint Laurent…The elusive and empowering balance of femininity, strength and power, that each of these designers achieved, is the element that Lia harnesses when she designs each range for Moss and Spy
Returning to Australia with her young daughter Lia decided to create a new label with her distinctive handwriting drawing together on the new influences she could see emerging. Her vision was simple – to create feminine clothes for women who want to be noticed.
She first teamed up with George Spyrou but this time as a partnership and the result was Moss and Spy. In 2008 Lia became the Sole Director of the Moss and Spy business and opened her first flag-ship store in Sydney.
Now distributing through 200 boutiques around Australia, and International distribution to New Zealand, south East Asia and The Middle East and the first Moss and Spy flagship store is now open in Double Bay.
Lia’s striking feminine appeal continues to excite buyers with every collection. Her mix of fabrics, love of floral prints combined with elegant embellishments creates her unique style and strong and feminine allure.
Lia’s style is comfortable yet glamorous, and she invokes a French expression- “Je suis bien dans ma peau” which literally means “I feel good in my skin”- to express what style is to her; being confident and feeling comfortable with who you are and what you wear.
1. Why is it so rewarding to be a leading Fashion Designer
I think being a designer is the most challenging of all creative jobs because every season you have to come up with a new collection from scratch. There are no formulas or patterns it’s all instinctive.
2. Where do you get your inspirations from?
My inspiration comes from all over, but I especially love the great French creators like Chanel , Givency and Yves St Laurent
3. What has been your greatest achievement?
My daughter who is now 6 ½ years old .. I started the label for her so that I had control over my life and I needed flexibility. She was 6 months old when I started working on the first collection and she would sit on my lap while I sketched.
4. What has been your greatest challenge and how did you overcome it?
I originally started out with a business partner who handled all the finance , administration and the general running of the business while I concentrated on design and marketing.
Two years ago I bought his share and now have complete control over the business. It was a great strain on my creative side initially but this has made me really focus on planning and allocating time for each area of the business without taking away from my creative time.
5. Whose style do you most admire?
I really admire Catherine Deneuve - Sexy , elegant and smart!!
6. What changes in your business, if any, have you made to adapt to the current economic climate?
We have opened our own retail store which has increased overall turnover and plan to open another in 6 months.
7. Divulge the fashion piece that you couldn't live without?
My little blk lace dress , in fact I’ve got about 10 of them as I do one every season, Great with boots in the winter and great with my Jimmy Choo’s in the Summer.
8. What is your worst fashion faux pas?
Pink hair in the eighties!
9. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years time plan to have 4- 6 stores and a great team behind me so I can travel more .
10. What advice can you offer to emerging fashion designers?
Follow your dream, don’t give up and work very hard !!!
11. Lia’s ‘HOT TIP’ –
Always have great hair and shoes then throw on a Moss& Spy dress and no other accessories required!! Looking Fabulous!
