FASHION FUTURE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Australian designer Toni Maticevski talks of timeless style and his fashion journey.

With his signature manipulation of traditional fashion silhouettes and use of beautiful materials, Toni Maticevski’s collections and pieces mark a desirable move from conventional fashion.

Tucking, twisting and looping his textural and fluid fabrics into fascinating shapes, Maticevski believes every stitch and detail; every line and every shape should provoke an emotional response from both the wearer and the observer.

After completing his Degree in Fashion Design with Honours at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Maticevski worked in the local fashion industry, experiencing the fashion process from design to production. He worked with Donna Karan early in his career, but soon made a pilgrimage to Paris where he took up a position at Cerruti for two seasons.

Exploring his garment construction abilities to the absolute limit, every Maticevski season is different while managing to hold its unique and uncompromising handwriting. Colours are interspersed within garments to provide unusual yet complementary moods to the collections. Through endless experimentation with cuts and colour, Maticevski explores the boundaries of fashion process and movement.

Belying Toni Maticevski is the focus that fashion is more than clothes. Quiet and shy, this young man has been creating a world where broken pieces collide into beautiful and poetic places. With light as air dream gowns that breath in the wearer and her life.

1. Why is it so rewarding to be a leading Fashion Designer?

It’s something I don’t think about really. I just do what I do because I need to. It’s about having moments with beautiful people and beautiful spirited people all over the world. That’s magical!!

2.Where do you get your inspirations from?

Anything and everything. From music, to movies, to the classics, it just happens that things come to me.

3. What has been your greatest achievement?

I have some very lovely friends and clients who have amazing jobs and lives,  I guess, I am lucky enough to share my journey and designs with them when I make something for them.

4. What has been your greatest challenge and how did you overcome it?

I don’t know, I think everyone sees things differently.  A challenge is an opportunity to think outside yourself.. Without sounding too ‘cliché’, everything is a gift.. Including misfortune and challenges.

5. Whose style do you most admire?

I love so many…. I think Hayden Christensen always looks great… I do love also Salma Hayek.. God she is the bomb!

6. What changes in your business, if any, have you made to adapt to the current economic climate?

I have not made any changes…. If anything it’s given me more freedom to be even more experimental and clearer about my vision. The best thing to come out of it is: Not fearing it.

7. Divulge the fashion piece that you couldn't live without?

A tailored jacket. Always a winner at any time day/ night/ work/ date/ etc.

8. What is your worst fashion faux pas?

My own-There are some things I wont do. Tracksuits, ugg boots and especially anything too bright or colourful. I feel like a fool in them.
On others-who cares! Everything is great. Including the trashy..

9. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I only have eyes on today.

10. What advice can you offer to emerging fashion designers?

It is different for each designer! It’s about what you want out of it. Everyone is gifted for different reasons. So stick to your guns, listen and absorb and then tare it all up and make your own decisions which are right for you….

11. Toni’s ‘HOT TIP’  well tailored jacket.
