FASHION FUTURE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Australian designer Cathryn Wills from label

MIMCO

talk of her timeless style and fashion journey.

Describe your style or collection.

Our latest collection is Evolution Utopia. In true Mimco style, it is a contrast of moods & materials, all sitting under the umbrella of the evolution of the species. We cover a rough & tough apocalyptic essence, and a slinky & sensual vampire personality - and cross both with a purer view of the future with plastic fantastic motifs of oversized chain links & flowers. I wanted to be in & around fashion from the age of 11.

didn’t make a start however until much later. Time at Benetton, Jag, Country Road, various freelance gigs and some business consulting work during uni, all finally bought me to the doors of Mimco. Being fortunate enough to work with Amanda Briskin and her creative team, opened my eyes to the notion of an innovative business having commercial success. I have worked to continue this ethos in my role at Mimco, irrespective of our growth - ideas and creativity make people happy and we all need a bit more of that! I’ve had several mentors in my professional life, however would say my sisters & parents were the most influential in my personality and nature.

1.Why is it so rewarding to be a leading Fashion Designer?

Working in a creative & multi faceted role has always been my aim, I’m fortunate to have the chance to do that daily.

2. Where do you get your inspirations from?

Everywhere. Art & movies have a big influence as does travel - beauty is everywhere & I attempt to put myself in places where I can best absorb it.

3.What has been your greatest achievement?

When it comes to my work life, achievement is a group effort, so building a creative, passionate team is probably the thing I look on as being the hardest thing & that which has given me a level of satisfaction. .

4.What has been your greatest challenge and how did you overcome it?

Work life balance. I’m still overcoming it.

5.Whose style do you most admire?

I like anyone’s style who is comfortable in their own skin. To name a few - Roisin Murphy, Tilda Swinton, Irina Lazareanu, Tavi Williams

6.What changes in your business, if any, have you made to adapt to the current economic climate?

We’ve obsessed about the value equation for our customer - as we should! We work to ensure she leaves our doorway a happy lady, in the knowledge she’s bought something beautiful that will last.

7.Divulge the fashion piece that you couldn't live without?

Sunglasses. I could name labels but we’re launching in a few months, so it will be all about Mimco Eyewear for me soon!

8.What is your worst fashion faux pas?

Let’s just say 1991 wasn’t pretty. And I blame it all on Jag.

9.Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Living in Paris, writing, drawing, learning.

10.What advice can you offer to emerging fashion designers?

Be true to yourself. Listen & learn. Work hard. Don’t forget, fresh ideas are gold, there’s enough homogenization out there.

11.Cathryn’s ‘HOT TIP’Look at tweens for style secrets, they’re the future.
