FASHION FUTURE INTERVIEW

Australian designer

Bianca Spender

talks of her romantic style and fashion journey.

- LOVE AMONG THE RUINS –

“Where the quiet-coloured end of evening smiles, Miles and miles….”
Robert Browning

___________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Bianca has gained extensive national and international exposure before she joined, Carla Zampatti’s- the Matriarch of Australian Fashion.

Her resume of study and experience includes, the well know East Sydney Fashion design School, work in Italy, followed by three years in Paris at the Martine Sitbon maison.

Bianca’s style is modern urban. With a fresh approach, Bianca’s eye for detail and strong focus on shape, form and tailoring has given her a distinct signature style.

In August 2007, ‘Bianca Spender’ had her first concept area in Myer’s Sydney City store and in September 2008, the first Bianca Spender boutique opened in Sydney.

In January 2010, Bianca signed an exclusive agreement with David Jones.

In May 2010, Bianca had her first stand alone show, debuting at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week.

The “Bianca Spender” label adds a youthful dimension, complimenting the Carla Zampatti brand and continuing the company’s focus of broadening the Carla Zampatti appeal to a wider market.

Describe your style or collection.

Spring/Summer 2010

Draping is entwined with carefully defined structure to create a new poetry. Shadow line jackets mould like armour with seams that curve around the body. Pockets along high waisted slim fit pants are slightly draped to reveal the detail.

Colours take their cue from gloaming-soft nudes and icy greys through to intense golds and cobalt. Finest chiffons brush against stiff cotton metals as ruched silks enwrap the body. White lace compliments the recurring transparent theme, glancing the body in a jumpsuit, pant and dress.

The sheer veil is lifted on a dreamy spring. Beauty and loss, love and wistfulness, spirit through the forest in a twilight dance.

Bianca Signature style is ‘Modern Urban & Romantic’. As well as ‘Warm & Emotive’.

Soft flowing movement in pockets, lapels and collars. Draping is organic, feminine and unexpected but not to pretty, with exquisite detailing and sheer rousching that is intricate and fragile.

1.Why is it so rewarding to be a Fashion Designer?

The combination of design, style, fabrics and creativity is a vehicle for me to express a range of human emotions and life’s beauty through clothing. It is rewarding to see people wearing my designs and allowing their feelings flow through. Clothing generates a emotive response.

2. Where do you get your inspirations from?

The current collection is inspired by an ‘Enchanted Forest and beautiful overgrown Vines”.

- LOVE AMONG THE RUINS –

Robert Browning

___________________________________________________________________________________________________ As a harp playing in the background, a flock of pre-Raphaelite nymphs wander aimlessly through an enchanted forest. Mythical girls are softly draped in silk fabrics ranging in white, nude, bronze, and icy greys. Soft as clouds each of the dresses flow effortless around the body, some draped over the shoulder while others billow down the nape of the back and are suspended from the shoulder by one single strap.

3.What has been your greatest achievement?

2009 was a big year for me and my label. I increased the 'Bianca Spender' range by 100%. I signed an exclusive agreement with David Jones, opened my own store at Paddington and then going live with an online boutique. . .

4.What has been your greatest challenge and how did you overcome it?

There have been 2 significant challenges in my life. Firstly, as a young student living in Paris it was hard, extremely hard to find work. Secondly, not wanting to state the obvious but having the constant comparison to Carla.

I think, having studied and worked overseas, I grown immensely in skills, character and experience. I am clear about my designs skills and ability and I know I have lots to learn also but I am my own person with my own unique style

5.Whose style do you most admire?

Jarrad Victor- He is an Artist using amazing textures, colour and -reality of layers. Also, Lee Millar –The photographer- she has a beautiful old world style and amazing attention to detail.

6.What changes in your business, if any, have you made to adapt to the current economic climate?

I am focused on what the customer wants and listening to the demand. I ensure that every colour is perfect, each piece – detailed, resolved, valued, proportioned and irresistible. I ensure that my designs are practical, creative unique.

7.Divulge the fashion piece that you couldn't live without?

Jump suits- they are so versatile- both for evening wear or lounging around the house.

I love Vanessa Balenciaga, Jil Sander and I have a favorite Akira skirt.

8.What is your worst fashion faux pas?

My Curly fringe in the 90’s.

9.Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Growing the Family Business.

10.What advice can you offer to emerging fashion designers?

Gets lots and lots or work experience. Build your network and develop your contacts.

11. Bianca’s ‘HOT TIP’ Invest in beautiful quality- that lasts…

Be in touch with ‘the client’ and know your ‘market’. Most importantly, BE responsive to changes’
