FASHION FUTURE INTERVIEW

Australian designer

Yuliy Gershinsky

Fashion Future: Who would wear you lable- ie the ultimate 'x' girl?

Yuliy: Probably somebody who is confident, strong minded and knows themselves quite well.

FF: Where does you brand sit in the Australian and International Fashion market?

Yuliy: In the Australian market the brand is quite niche and unique. It is the only label making these types of garments. In the international market it sits in the luxe street wear echelon.

FF: What is lacking in the Australian Fashion scene?

Yuliy: Too much seriousness. Not enough fun and experimentation and joking around… perhaps this is a worldwide trait within the fashion community?

FF: What are your Fashion career/business aspirations?

Yuliy: I am hoping to collaborate on fashion and art pieces with larger companies as well as other designers to create some incredible and fun things. I also would love to begin a label and start creating full collections for both men and women.

FF: What do you hope to gain from showing at MBFW?

Yuliy: More than anything I will use the showing as a base for the rest of my career in design. I am hoping that it will allow me to catch a lot of different designer’s and companies attention for possible job opportunities and collaborations.

FF: Who are your ideal stockists?

Yuliy: I am all for internet stockists. Large Fashion Webstores like MR PORTER, LN-CC, OKI-NI, LUISAVIAROMA would be preferable amongst other smaller ones.

FF: Who or what would be your ideal collaboration ie think H&M, Target Sportsgirl

Yuliy: I would say NIKE – Technologically they are more advanced than any other clothing company and it would be amazing to make use of their tech capabilities to realise my own designs.

FF: How do you compare Australian Fashion in relation to the Global markets?

Yuliy: Australian fashion is more relaxed and laid back. Obviously it is not up to the standard of the long established European houses but it is definitely developing. There is a lot of ambition and motivation amongst the young designers in Australia but unfortunately there is not enough support or incentive to start and manage a small fashion business as there is in other countries. This deters a lot of young designers from staying in Australia and most choose to pursue careers elsewhere.

FF: Why would people buy your style?

Yuliy: There is something for everyone. A lot of the garments are re-interpretations of staple menswear pieces ie. The parka, the bomber jacket, trackpants and everything in between. The designs all push innovation but with a degree of wearability and restraint.

FF: Where will you be in 2015?

Yuliy: I will either be in my studio, snowed in under a ton of work and constantly creating or I will be on a beach somewhere relaxing from doing the former.
