FASHION FUTURE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Australian designer Joe Farage talks of timeless style and his fashion journey.

1.Why is it so rewarding to be a leading Fashion Designer?

The fashion industry offers a dynamic, challenging and constantly evolving career. As a designer I also have the perk of travelling throughout the world to experience different cultures, style and fashions. As an Australian designer I also have the fortunate position to be able to foster other Australian talent across fashion, design and the arts.

2.Where do you get your inspirations from?

Everyday life, culture, music, art and my family. Living in Australia we are surrounded by amazing natural colour and light – from our harbor to the centre of Australia we have a unique palette of colour and texture to draw on which is not found in other parts of the world. I think its part of what makes Australian fashion so successful overseas.

3.What has been your greatest achievement?

The Farage brand. We put everything we had into opening a small boutique in the Strand arcade 12 years ago and with a lot of hard work we’ve created a brand that remains committed to our foundations – exceptional tailoring and Australian craftsmanship. Everyday I’m inspired by the journey we’ve had so far.

4.What has been your greatest challenge and how did you overcome it?

The greatest challenge was growing from having 3 staff members to 30 in 1 year was a little overwhelming and challenging. I had to very quickly learn how to be clear with each individual’s job role and ensure we were all accountable to our roles.

5. Whose style do you most admire?

I really admire Tom Ford’s style. He is always looks chic and very polished. And I love Audrey Hepburn’s style as she was just so classic and timeless!

6.What changes in your business, if any, have you made to adapt to the current economic climate?

We’ve always paid attention to our financials and over the past 18 months we’ve been modest in all things. This approach has ensured we have remained on track with our growth plans and haven’t missed any opportunities. We’ve also used this time to reflect on who we are and strengthened our commitment to supporting Australian business and talent through partnerships with Opera Australia, The Art Gallery of NSW and a number of other organizations.

7.Divulge the fashion piece that you couldn't live without?

The white shirt. It’s a timeless wardrobe essential that seamlessly takes you from the boardroom to black tie, a weekend in the hunter or brunch by the harbor. Invest in a good quality one and it will last longer, fit better and look amazing.

8.What is your worst fashion faux pas?

Skinny stone washed denim jeans in the late 80’s

9.Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

We have exciting plans for the Farage brand to expand locally and internationally, and to develop our product lines so we hope that in 5 years Farage is recognized as one of Australia’s leading luxury brands

10. What advice can you offer to emerging fashion designers?

Learn your business inside and out. Katy and I started off doing everything ourselves from the ground up and today we remain very hands on. If the financials aren’t your strong point make an effort to learn, too often we have seen amazing brands and designers get into trouble because they haven’t understood this

11.Joe’s ‘HOT TIP’ –

Invest in Timeless, Quality pieces.
