FASHION FUTURE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Australian designer Gary Bigeni talks about his fashion journey.

THERE IS A PAIN

There is a pain -- so utter –It swallows substance up –Then covers the Abyss with Trance – So memory can step Around – across – upon it –As one within a swoon – Goes safely – where an open eye – Would drop Him – Bone by Bone.

Consumed by an immense pain, and yet masked with the brightest smile, There Is A Pain, Gary Bigeni’s AW10 collection pays homage to a lecturer and close friend of Gary’s that, earlier this year lost his battle with Cancer.

“Simon (Zakka) was always joyful and optimistic despite the constant hurt he suffered”, Gary remembers. The layers and tiers of this range emulate the smokescreen that his dear, brave friend pulled off on a daily basis.

Both sombre and inspiring, There Is A Pain maintains Gary’s signature sweeping panels and jersey drapery, and brings together a celebration of juxtaposed feelings and looks. Gary’s choice of colour-ways also reflect these sentiments, with Cold Steel blue, Pink Heather, Petroleum, Flannel Grey, Black, and Ink colour-blocked and devoid of distracting prints.

Gary Bigeni is a label that creates a classic look with a modern edge. It’s a label that entices, appealing to women who desire quality garments and a fresh approach to fashion.

Gary’s penchant for Jersey makes his designs art forms that have their own clever structural secrets. Soft but tricky hems, interesting panelling and intricate design techniques are present in every element of his collections. His vision is to create new shapes and interesting silhouettes. His pieces urge the wearer to feel the inimitability of his design – Twisted neck and hemlines create dimensional shape and feelings within each individual piece. Gary relies on classic tailoring lines that are beautifully simplistic but challenging and unique at the same time.

Graduating from East Sydney Tech in 2002, Gary has developed over the past four years, creating a distinct and dynamic fashion label which caught the attention of Belinda Seper and as a result he has been stocked in The Corner Store.

In late 2008 Gary caught the eye of one of New York’s most influential showrooms, Denise Williamson. Launching during New York Fashion Week, Williamson will market the collection through both NY and LA to a wide audience including the USA, UK, Japan and the Middle East.
