FASHION FUTURE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Australain Designer Juli Grbac talks of timeless style and her fashion journey.

BIO-

Describe your style or collection

My collections are always feminine! I love making women look and feel ultra feminine. I place a lot of emphasis on the sculpting of clothes. Sometimes, I can do up to 9 toiles to get the fit right. My collection mainly consists of dresses and well cut basics. I like to do a seasonal piece that is on trend but generally, I design based on my 'personal' style for the season.

How and why you entered fashion Industry-

Fashion has always been what I have wanted to do. From a very young age I loved dressing up and making clothes and I guess it was just a natural progression to follow my passion.

Where did the journey into fashion design begin for you –
I started sewing when I was about 8 years old. My mum taught me to sew and she still works along side with me now. She is and has always been my biggest inspiration. She taught herself how to sew and now she loves supporting me in my business. I guess I am living out both of our dreams.

Who has influenced you most in your life –
As above, my mum has been my biggest influence. Also, another lady called Barbra Battaglini, who has recently passed. I used to freelance for her. We went to Shanghi, Barbados and many other places working in some of the best hotels in the world. She used to fly me to these locations for the instillations of the uniforms of these hotels. She gave me the best advice and one thing that she always used to say, that stays with me to day is: Presentation, Presentation, Presentation. The 3 P’s, I always thing of this for everything I do in the business.
1.Why is it so rewarding to be a leading Fashion Designer?

The true reward comes when I see how good a client feels in my clothes, to know I can empower people to feel good about themselves is what will keep me designing forever.

2.Where do you get your inspirations from?

From personal experiences, when I travel I see different things that inspire me, I also gain inspiration through everyday things and people, I like to just watch people see how they dress, & their style it all inspires me.

3.What has been your greatest achievement?

Getting married to my husband, and changing into 3 different dresses. It was such a busy time for me, that it felt like we just had to “fit” the wedding in, I was so worried about how I was going to get time to make my dress, let alone the other two I wanted to have to change in! Anyway, I managed to make 3 dresses and I think my main dress was the biggest achievement yet, it was such a big job.

4.What has been your greatest challenge and how did you overcome it?

Maintaining my business for 8 years, it has been a challenge every day, it’s hard as there are highs and lows like running any business but seeing the end result of a dress or how someone feels once they put it on is what keeps me going.

5. Whose style do you most admire?

At the moment Leighton Meester, I love Gossip Girl and what she wears off the show is so fashion forward and risky, she really pushes fashion to the extreme.

6.What changes in your business, if any, have you made to adapt to the current economic climate?

At the moment I am looking at getting some garments made off shore, this is to appeal to both ends of the market, as people are a lot more price conscious.

7.Divulge the fashion piece that you couldn't live without?

I Love LBD’s, I have way to many but having the right black dress for a number of occasions makes dressing really easy if you are running out the door.
I Love accessories, necklaces especially, they can lift a outfit and make all my LBD’s look completely different.
I also love sunglasses, I have loads but I love the classic aviator, I have around 5 different pairs of aviators, they just add to any outfit.
8.What is your worst fashion faux pas?

Yellow vinyl pants in the 90’s, I wore these when I used to go out nightclubbing…. Everyone wanted them as I made them myself, but now I look back and just cringe… eww.
9.Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully still making beautiful dresses, I would like to export all around the world and fingers crossed I will be selling my clothes in the major department stores of the world, like Bergdorf’s and Harvey Nick’s.

10. What advice can you offer to emerging fashion designers?

Don’t give up hope, it’s a really hard business to get into and takes some time, but if you believe in yourself your dreams can come true.
11.Juli’s ‘HOT TIP’ –

Accessorize, accessorize and accessorize. It can change any look, take for instance a maxi, you can wear it with heels and diamonties and look formal, or wear the same dress with a jeweled pair of thongs, chunky necklaces and a cuff and you are boho chic.
