FASHION FUTURE INTERVIEW

Australian designer

Leah Hibbert

FF: Is there always a lot of competition at TAFE between the designers?

Leah: I guess there is, itís at the back at everyones mind, but we help each other out a lot as well for our final collections. Weíre all really close and itís more about helping than competition.

FF: Whatís your ultimate career aim?

Leah: Iíd love to start my own label at some point, but right now I just want to get some more experience and maybe work overseas or for a really high profile designer here.

FF: What kind of skills would you want to build on by doing that?

Leah: Iíd love to build on my knowledge of the business side of the industry. We get taught a bit at TAFE, but I think a lot of it can only be taught with hands on experience.

FF: What was your inspiration for this collection?

Leah: For this collection I was inspired by the natural geometry of minerals and as well as the elements, plus a little bit of science fiction writing as well. I quite like the harsher side of nature- when people think of the natural aesthetics, they think of the smooth, round, soft or muted and Iím trying to go for the angular, sharp and bright hues.

FF: What is your collection mainly made from?

Leah: Iíve used a lot of silks and wool, but Iím also using Perspex and quartz as embellishment.

FF: Why did you decide to use these unconventional embellishment materials?

Leah: I loved the look and feel of the Perspex, because a lot of designers use sequences as embellishment, but I wanted something heavier to create more of an impact.

FF: Is sustainability a big part of your process?

Leah: Iím always mindful of that, I try not to use too much leather, I opt for PVC over leather for sustainability. Iím also going to include bamboo in my collection because where we are in Australia, itís quite warm and humid which makes bamboo a good option because itís breathable and sustainable because when they harvest it the plant doesnít die and it also doesnít require a lot of water for its growth.

FF: What do you hope to gain from being part of RAFW?

Leah: I think itís a really good platform for people to see our stuff and also to get a great insight into the inner workings of the fashion industry. Getting buyers interested would probably come a bit further down the track, when Iím interested in staring my own label, but Iíll just have to wait and see what comes out of this.
