FASHION FUTURE INTERVIEW

Australian designer

Kaylene Milner

Fashion Future: Who would wear you lable- ie the ultimate 'x' girl?

Kaylene: The STURM & DRANG woman is sophisticated, but appreciates a level of humour and irony in her clothing. She isn't afraid to make a statement - but her statement garments are carefully chosen to stand the test of time. Her look is contemporary but she never falls into the "fashion victim" category.

FF: Where does you brand sit in the Australian and International Fashion market?

Kaylene: The brand sits at the high end of the australian luxury market, with a view of fitting in comfortably amongst international luxury labels in the future.

FF: What is lacking in the Australian Fashion scene?

Kaylene: There is a definite lack of options for women with disposable incomes, particularly in the 35-50 age bracket.

FF: What are your Fashion career/business aspirations?

Kaylene: I aspire to create covetable and innovative luxury garments and accessories, which will sell under my brand name "STURM & DRANG", both locally and overseas.

FF: What do you hope to gain from showing at MBFW?

Kaylene: I hope to gain press, which might open up a few doors and introduce my work to future collaborators.

FF: Who are your ideal stockists?

Kaylene: Pretty Dog, Parlour X, Assin, Poepke

FF: Who or what would be your ideal collaboration ie think H&M, Target Sportsgirl

Kaylene: My ideal collaboration would be with a shoe designer – someone who could really push the boundaries, like Alexandre Herchcovitch. This would not be a money making exercise, but rather an artistic collaboration.

FF: How do you compare Australian Fashion in relation to the Global markets?

Kaylene: Australian Fashion is quite commercial and geared more towards Spring/Summer. It has often been criticised for being a watered-down version of the international market, but I do not believe this to be the case (for the most part). Whilst the products are very commercial, they also have a uniquely Australian flavour, which at times goes unappreciated until you step back and view it from a wider global context.

FF: Why would people buy your style?

Kaylene: People would buy STURM & DRANG garments as an investment. The relaxed luxury and quality fibres, combined with a distinctly unique aesthetic make for an enticing buy!

FF: Where will you be in 2015?

Kaylene: Given the rapid pace of the fashion industry, 2015 seems like a long time away! Regardless of where I am, I hope to be surrounded by inspiring people who have as much passion for creating as I do, whether that means working for another company, or developing my own brand.
