FASHION FUTURE INTERVIEW

Australian designer

Cynthia Thai

Fashion Future: Who would wear you lable- ie the ultimate 'x' girl?

Cynthia: I think it'd be a mix ! Some garments are quite out there and would probably be saved for the likes of Kimbra and Lady Gaga. There's also others that are much more wearable; I would absolutely love to dress one of my idols Anna Dello Russo ! As well as Hanneli Mustaparta, Kate Bosworth and Elin Kling who were my muses when I was designing this range.

FF: Where does you brand sit in the Australian and International Fashion market?

Cynthia: Unfortunately quite high in the Australian and International fashion markets, I'd really love to create clothes that are accessible to everyone; some are, some are also; with perhaps many years of saving ! The hand knitted beaded garments are just such laborious garments to make; stringing on the beads on to the string takes so long ! And then there is the actual knitting of the beads, which is equally time consuming; especially because I can't do these knits on a machine it has to be done by hand. But I feel as though the effort is justified by the end product.

FF: What is lacking in the Australian Fashion scene?

Cynthia: I believe not much really with online shopping making so much more available to us the land down under. Although it does feel as though there isn't much available to women sized 14 and upwards.

FF: What are your Fashion career/business aspirations?

Cynthia: I 'm really not quite sure exactly what I want to do career wise, although definitely in the Fashion industry, but I have more set myself life goals. I want to be the girl that was amazing at sewing, patternmaking and knitting and everything related ! I want to know everything you can know about these interests- I just want to fill my brain with knowledge.

FF: What do you hope to gain from showing at MBFW?

Cynthia: I'd really like to get my name out there, that's my main hope. I'd absolutely love for a singer to wear something at a music festival though, or even an installation at a museum. I'd be incredibly proud of myself at that point !

FF: Who are your ideal stockists?

Cynthia: There's stores in Sydney like the Corner Shop, Parlour X, Pretty Dog and Incu where I go in and fawn over the amazing garments they have in there. But then there's the abundance of online stores like, farfetch, net-a-porter, shopbop and mychameleon that I would love to be stocked in.

FF: Who or what would be your ideal collaboration ie think H&M, Target Sportsgirl

Cynthia: A collaboration with H&M would be amazing ! But I'd also love to do something with Sportsgirl so that it can be accessible to my peers here in Australia. However the possible exposure with H&M would be insane !

FF: How do you compare Australian Fashion in relation to the Global markets?

Cynthia: I see the majority of Australian fashion to be quite wearable, easy ? Cool but we're not trying too hard. I'd love to see the public much more influenced by our designers as well as younger/newer international labels rather than the usual Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Prada- not that they aren't amazing, because they are ! More variety in what people wear would be truly inspiring.

FF: Why would people buy your style?

Cynthia: I think people would buy my clothes because they're fun ! You'd have so much fun in some of my beaded pieces. They have great sensory aspects to them too ! The visual, feel and the sound of them coming from a mile away ! The only one that they are lacking is taste; but I feel as though that can't be expected.

FF: Where will you be in 2015?

Cynthia: Ideally in 2015 I'll be in either England or America doing or have completed a Masters in Knitwear, my interest in knitwear has sky rocketed after the last year and my internship at Maille with Hellen, she's great ! She's introduced me to the knitting machine which I feel like I could never live without nowadays. She's so supportive, it's so great to be interning with someone like this !
