FASHION FUTURE INTERVIEW

Australian designer

Christopher Baldwin

Fashion Future: Who would wear you lable- ie the ultimate 'x' girl?

Christopher: I think the ultimate "X" girl would be Jane Fonda or Anita Pallenberg circa 1960's Barbarella. Both would be teleported from that era which is in the past but set in the future and brought into the now.
The collection draws heavily from sci-fi movies such as this, so I suppose these two bombshells would be the ideal women to dress

FF: Where does you brand sit in the Australian and International Fashion market

Christopher: In this range I've used a lot of high-end fabrications predominately sourced from Italy (I have a deplorable addiction to high-tech textiles) so if I were to sell this collection it would most likely sit in the top end of the Australian Market. Alongside these textiles I have also been creating a lot of my own reptilian like fabrications out of leather, cellophane and cable ties. I am still unsure if these are truly accessible in the RTW market.
At the moment I'm not so much thinking of this as a brand, but rather a body of work showcasing the skills I have as both a Ready to Wear designer and Costume Designer. I feel that for this to be considered a brand I would need to be selling

FF: What is lacking in the Australian Fashion scene?

Christopher: Innovation and a Unique Vision, also a sense of Honesty and Transparency. ……… and most importantly designers supporting the local industry of producers and manufacturers as opposed to doing everything offshore.

FF: What are your Fashion career/business aspirations?

Christopher: I have a really strong passion for RTW as well as Costume design. I would most like to be running a business where these two principles can sit alongside each other, on the one hand producing accessible, ethically produced RTW and also unleashing out of this world, pure fantasy, not from this planet monster like costumes and collaborating with performance artists, contemporary dancers and filmmakers.

FF: What do you hope to gain from showing at MBFW?

Christopher: Exposure to a wider audience and hopefully some great press opportunities.

FF: Who are your ideal stockists?

Christopher: I'd be over the moon happy with any of the big name designer boutiques in Sydney.

FF: Who or what would be your ideal collaboration ie think H&M, Target Sportsgirl?

Christopher: Sydney Dance Company, Sydney Theatre Co, De Quincey Co.

FF: How do you compare Australian Fashion in relation to the Global markets?

Christopher: Australian Fashion is designed by Australian Designers for an Australian Market, I think it's hard to compare the two as they are catering for different climates and lifestyles.

FF: Why would people buy your style?

Christopher: They would buy my style because they want to have FUN and look like a futuristic space reptile, all whilst having the biggest smile plastered across their face .

FF: Where will you be in 2015?

Christopher: On a space ship to outer space, seeking the next habitable frontier (I would have designed the outfits for the crew) OR living and working out of my tree house come studio.
All jokes aside, I hope to be happy creating and collaborating with beautiful people.
