FASHION FUTURE INTERVIEW

Australian designer

Charlotte OíCarrigan

Fashion Future: Why did your collection stand out from the rest?

Charlotte: I approached it in a way that was a little bit different. I focused not so much on the technical side- panels and tailoring, but ore on textures. One thing about my collection is that you really want to feel each garment, itís really tactile. Most of my embellishments were hand made by me so itís really unique to me. Iíve never been into a lot of couture work but all the detail Iíve handworked myself. So thatís really different to those who play with digital prints and paneling.

FF: Your collection plays with the themes of reuse and sustainability, how is that unique to your collection?

Charlotte: I definitely use reuse as an aesthetic purpose. Iíve always been interested in op shopping, adding and changing garments. Reuse is a huge part of my collection- like on my pants Iíve attached these barnacle things, which are actually zippers that Iíve coiled up, so obviously to save money I went to Reverse Garbage and got a whole lot of zippers- so from that it all just developed and came to look good.

FF: Those kinds of construction techniques are very couture based, do you feel this will need to be altered when you want to make a mass produced collection in the future?

Charlotte: I looked at the commerciality of it, and yes, those are the kinds of things I have to look that because I wonít be able to employ people to coil zippers. So yeah, those couture elements will probably need to be dulled down if I decide to go mass market. You can go offshore and get beading done, so a bit of it can still be done, but I like to keep control over all my work and hand-make everything myself so the designs will probably need to be changed a little.

FF: What is your ultimate career aim?

Charlotte: I would love to start my own label, but not straight away. I think working under a designer would give me some great experience before starting my own brand. Iíve also always been really interested in magazines- editing and art directing; Iíve been interning at Shop ĎTil You Drop, so styling is also what I may want to get into, so itís a great experience.

FF: Do you think youíre ready to start your own brand from the business point of view?

Charlotte: I definitely need some more experience and help in that area. We have business subjects at TAFE, but Iíd definitely still need a business partner to take care of that side while I focus on the creative side. Just seeing all the partnerships- like the Zimmerman sisters and Romance Was born, I think having another person to bounce ideas off would really help the business.

FF: What do you hope to gain from being part of RAFW?

Charlotte: Just getting some great publicity, getting my name out there, getting some great images so I can really start to put my portfolio together. Iíd love a job offer! But I donít know if thatís something that will be on the cards! Mainly just getting my name out there.
