FASHION FUTURE INTERVIEW

Australian designer

Carlie Waterman

Fashion Future: Who would wear you label?

Carlie: The target market for my label is fashion forward women in their early twenties to late thirties who appreciate richly textural fabrics worked into highly sculptural garments. The collection combines strong and sculptural silhouettes contrasted by soft, feminine textures created by new and innovative fabric manipulations. Bold prints and bright hand woven fabrics are teamed with feminine smocked pieces in soft pastel colours, which enables the collection to appeal to a wide range of the target demographic.

FF: Where does you brand sit in the Australian and International Fashion market

Carlie: The collection would sit amongst other high-end Australian labels as it combines luxurious and innovative fabrics, with interesting cuts and shapes.

FF: What are your Fashion career/business aspirations?

Carlie: My ultimate fashion goal is to be successful in my own label. However I would like to further my skills and experience working with an established designer before I pursue a label of my own.

FF: What do you hope to gain from showing at MBFW?

Carlie: MBFWA is an incredible opportunity. It has already given me a lot of exposure as an emerging designer. After fashion week I hope to get a great job designing for an Australian label and I believe that being part of The Innovators show will give me the best opportunity to do this. MBFWA provides a great platform for people from the industry and the wider public to see future talent.

FF: Who are your ideal stockists?

Carlie: The Corner Shop, Blood Orange, Parlour X, Lands End, Pretty Dog.

FF: Who or what would be your ideal collaboration ie think H&M, Target Sportsgirl

Carlie: My ideal collaboration would be with a company like Sportsgirl or Topshop. Young womens fashion which is fun, colourful and targeted at confident fashion savvy women who like bold prints, interesting fabric manipulations and strong silhouettes.

FF: Has fashion design been your passion from day one or was it something you discovered along the way?

Carlie: My ideal collaboration would be with a company like Sportsgirl or Topshop. Young womens fashion which is fun, colourful and targeted at confident fashion savvy women who like bold prints, interesting fabric manipulations and strong silhouettes.

FF:Why would people buy your style?

Carlie: My collection is an eclectic mix of textures and fabrics. Leather, silks and wools have been smocked and embroidered. Raffia and plastic was hand woven to create beautiful textured fabrics. Starch silk organza was laser cut with incredibly fine 'lace' designs. Laser cut silk chiffon was layered creating built up surfaces. Digital prints add another graphic element to the collection and tie together the pop citrus colours and bright whites with the pastel lilacs and nudes of the range. Heavily beaded pieces have also been designed and add another textural component to the collection. Fashion forward women who have an appreciation for strong silhouettes, lux fabrics and an eclectic and innovative combination of fabric textures will buy the collection.

FF: Where will you be in 2015?

Carlie: Designing, being creative and loving the job that I am in.
